Student Volunteer Army (SVA) founder Sam Johnson has today launched a new programme targeting primary school student and already has 32,000 young people signed up.

“We know that people are more likely to continue volunteering the earlier they start so this great initiative will go a long way in helping to secure the volunteer sector in New Zealand in the future,” says Mr Ngaro.

Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector Alfred Ngaro says National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to mark the contribution of volunteers across the country and to get involved.

National Volunteer Week runs from 18-24 June.

“Volunteering does so much for New Zealand. Every week over 400,000 kiwis volunteer for registered charities. That obviously doesn’t represent all the other sectors where volunteers play a vital role, but adds up to over 2 million hours contributed to our communities,” says Mr Ngaro.

The Minister for Pacific Peoples and the Community and Voluntary Sector, Alfred Ngaro, says this year’s Queens Birthday Honours list recognises the depth of leadership and commitment of those working in the community.

58 leaders have been honoured for their service, including eight from the Pacific community.

The Government will invest $6 million over four years to support prosperous and more resilient communities, Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Alfred Ngaro says.

$1.5 million has been added to the Department of Internal Affairs baseline funding, which means the Community and Voluntary sector will receive a further $6 million in just four years with the additional funding set to continue after 2020/21.

The 2016 Public Trust and Confidence in Charities survey serves as a reminder of the regulator role of Charity Services and the transparency of the Charities Register says Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Alfred Ngaro.

The survey has been run every two years since 2008 and the results are relatively similar to previous years.

The results show that New Zealanders trust and confidence in the sector is moderate with an average rating of 5.9 out of 10.

From today communities will be able to apply for $12.5 million of grant funding for the projects and organisations that matter to them most says Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Alfred Ngaro.

The Community Organisation Grants Scheme (COGS) opens today.

“Every year we grant over $500,000 through this fund to support volunteering in New Zealand,” says Mr Ngaro.

“Volunteers contribute about $3.5 billion in labour every year, so this funding is one of many ways we can support the amazing contribution they give to New Zealand every day.

The Charities Amendment Bill passed its Third Reading unanimously this evening and will soon be signed into law.
