I want to firstly mihi to Terry Dunleavy, to Hohepa Campbell, to our taiohi and kaumatua.

Six years ago, at the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education, Nathan Matthews presented a paper to the hui entitled, He Kura Mäori, he Kura Hähi.

His korero was focused on Maori Boarding Schools and I want to share a statement from that report:

I am delighted to be here tonight at these 13th Annual Provider Awards to acknowledge and celebrate each and every one of the network that comes together under the kaupapa of the Poutiri Trust.

I want to firstly acknowledge the Poutiri Trust chairperson; George Skudder for the invitation to be here tonight; and to also pay tribute to our special guest speaker, Reverend Tom Poata from St Faiths.

The Poutiri Trust is founded on the vision of these words:

It was with great pleasure I saw that the Whanau Ora waiata would be included on today’s agenda.

And it made me ponder again on those kupu

Ruruia mai to rangatiratanga
To aroha, whakapono, tumanako
Hoea ngatahi nei tatou te marea nui tonu
Kia puawaitia te whanau ora e.

In essence, everything I could hope to say about workforce development is covered in that waiata.

It reminds me that together, we can be an incredible engine for creativity and innovation.

I greet you today, as uri of Whanganui – a descendant of te awa tupua.

Our rivers connect us to a common whakapapa; our stories link us forever, in the journey we make as whanau; every bend reminding us and inspiring us to cherish the leadership within.

Minister Responsible for Whanau Ora Tariana Turia today launched the Whanau Ora E-Booklet at the first gathering of Whanau Ora provider collectives in Auckland [Whanau Ora: Transforming our futures].

"This booklet brings together real stories about how whanau are finding their own answers to their situations. It shows whanau identifying what tools they need, how they can create change and who they want to work with, to invest in their own transformation. That is what Whanau Ora is all about".

I thank you for your interest and your initiative in being open to the connection between Whanau Ora and the Family Court.

It is also a great pleasure for me to be here today in the company of so many great minds from home and abroad.

Thank you Chief Commissioner Carl Davidson, for your words of welcome and indeed for the opportunity to be here today.

I am truly happy to be here today, to celebrate whanau yesterday, today, tomorrow.

It’s no secret that I’m what you might call a whanau fundamentalist.   I believe our whanau are fundamental to our future; they are the source of our greatest strength; their experience and their history the ultimate guidance for our actions tomorrow.

“From time to time, there has been speculation that when a decision has been made to cut a programme, it must be to support Whanau Ora.  I’ve heard it said in the family violence field; wild rumours have circulated around health providers, and now I’ve heard that Northland provider, Te Hau Ora o Kaikohe, has suggested that their youth programme (funded out of the Healthy Eating, Healthy Action fund) was cut and the funding transferred to Whanau Ora.

The Crown has paid $250,000 to settle an injustice created in 1997, when the Karanga Te Kere Whānau Trust lands near Taumarunui were not included in the Māori Reserved Land Amendment Act.

The ex-gratia payment recognises that, because of the 1955 Māori Reserved Land Act, the Trust over time received less than fair market rents for their lands in Taumarunui.

When I accepted the invitation to speak at this forum, I did so on the understanding that this was an ideal opportunity for a conversation to take place about how we support our communities to stimulate effective policy and reform outcomes?

It seemed to me the ultimate question - how do we re-orient our thinking to focus on the resilience of our communities for a better future?   These questions challenge me every single day.

The Government will invest an additional $30 million in Whanau Ora over the next four years, including $11.25 million in the coming year, Whanau Ora Minister Tariana Turia says.

The funding includes $25 million allocated in Budget 2011 and, subject to final Cabinet approval, another $5 million of reprioritised Māori Potential funding from within Vote Māori Affairs.

“The funding will maintain the momentum created by the Whanau Ora approach, with opportunities to extend coverage across the country,” Mrs Turia says.

As we travelled here this morning, I had one of those epiphany moments – that sudden realisation which illuminates the significance of this day, this moment in time.

It comes from the concept of Hohourongo – the name which you have embraced for your programme.

When I hear the word Hohouronga, I think of one of our marae at home – Maungarongo Marae in Ohakune.

Today is the first day of the school holidays.

For my nine year old mokopuna, my decision to speak at this conference was perhaps not the positive intervention she considered most appropriate for the first day of her break. There were plenty of other options she thought far more attractive than coming to the Theatrette at Massey University.

Fortunately for her, our life revolves around our whanau, and so there were actually choices that we could make, which were far more appealing.

This is a fantastic initiative which I am so proud to be able to participate in.

There is nothing of greater urgency for our whanau than the call for healthy living. The wellbeing of our whanau is the number one issue for Maraenui; for te Ao Maori; indeed for Aotearoa as a nation.

When I think of ‘number one’ it reminds me of something my mokopuna said to me last Sunday, when our staff and whanau comprised four teams in the Real Women’s duathlon.

In Steven Covey’s best-seller, the seven Habits of Highly Effective Families he refers to a speech given by former first lady Barbara Bush to a group of graduating students. She said:

“As important as your obligations as a doctor, lawyer, or business leader will be, you are a human being first, and those human connections – with spouses, with children, with friends – are the most important investments you will ever make.
