I am very pleased to be here with Wendy to launch the Ministry of Social Development’s Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast Regional Plan for the coming year.

Southland’s workforce is set to get a major boost from a Budget 2006 initiative that will expand job training opportunities and strengthen workers’ literacy skills.

The living standards of hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders will improve as a result of government initiatives coming into force within the next fortnight.

Unemployment benefit numbers in Southland have fallen by 14 per cent in the last year, according to the latest statistics.

The law changes will make student loans interest free and expand the Working for Families package. MP for Te Tai Tonga Hon Mahara Okeroa said more than 400,000 students and former students with loans, and another 160,000 working families will benefit from the change, which takes effect on 1 April.
