I was rapt to receive the invitation from Don Riesterer, on behalf of Te Ao Hou Trust, to join you at this very launch of the Toi Ora Whanau Ora Centre.

It seems so appropriate that we are celebrating Whanau Ora in the context of Te Ao Hou.

We are indeed welcoming the new world - and yet a world that sources its origins, vision and values from a tribal foundation stretching from the beginning of time to eternity.

This morning marks a significant step forward in New Zealand’s medical and research infrastructure. This new 3T Skyra MRI scanner is the most advanced machine of its type in Australasia.

The capabilities provided by this machine will have very real benefits for our people. Babies throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific that are born with significant heart defects will be scanned by this machine. Adult heart patients will also benefit. The information it will provide is a quantum step up on what has been achievable before.

On behalf of the Prime Minister I move that the House mark the tragic loss of life that has occurred at the Pike River Mine; express its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the men who died; thank the rescue teams and support teams who were so willingly prepared to help; and acknowledge the profound impact on the communities this disaster has affected.

Today is a day for mourning and remembering.

This afternoon New Zealand has been devastated by the news we have all been dreading.

A second explosion at the Pike River Mine confirms our very worst fears.

The 29 men whose names and faces we have all come to know, will never walk amongst us again.

This is a national tragedy.

A tragedy for the men's families, their workmates and friends, their community and our nation.

New Zealand is a small country.

A country where we are all our brothers keeper.

So to lose this many brothers at once strikes an agonising blow.

I am very pleased to be here to officially launch two new recordkeeping standards, the Disposal Standard and the Digital Recordkeeping Standard.

Importance of Recordkeeping Standards

One of the main goals of the Public Records Act 2005 is to raise the standard of recordkeeping across all sectors of government.

There are important reasons for doing this.

Good creation, maintenance and disposal of records is fundamental to good governance.

Good afternoon.
Thank you for the invitation to speak to you today.
Two years ago tomorrow I was appointed Minister of Health – happily because I asked for the position.
Before that, in my three years as opposition health spokesman, I also talked to hundreds of doctors and nurses, and managers and other health professionals.
I talk with many of you.
Your message was and is clear - you want more clinical engagement and more clinical leadership.
