Thank you for inviting me to celebrate the launch of Drug Help Line today, and I’d especially like to welcome Paul Traynor, Chief Executive of the Alcohol and Drug Association of New Zealand, to Parliament.

While tonight is a celebration for the community and voluntary sector who have made a success of the International Year for Volunteers, it is also an opportunity for us, as the Government, to say ‘Thank you’ to all you unsung heroes, who work tirelessly in our communities.

I used to say that one bad day in Government was worth about 1000 good days in opposition.

I think that three years in ministerial office has been worth almost all of the years I spent in the political wilderness.

It is my pleasure to welcome you all here this afternoon and to formally open this your Annual General Meeting.

The key role the EEO Trust and its members play in the promotion of equal employment opportunities means that meetings like this are an ideal opportunity to consider both how far we have come in terms of promoting and implementing the principles of equal employment opportunity and how far we still have to go.
