I would like to thank my colleague Jim Sutton for organising this forum today to discuss the economic aftermath of the events of September 11.

New Zealanders are the most creative and innovative people in the world.

It is worthwhile recalling that when this government took office just on two years ago, 10 December 1999 to be exact, it was after some years of hands off government which saw government largely opt out of industry and business support.

It is a pleasure to be here as Minister for SOEs, Tourism, Defence and as Associate Minister for Lord of the Rings.

Mr Chairman, members of FICCI, High Commissioner, distinguished guests.

The events that took place on September 11 shocked the world. In New Zealand we watched from afar as American emergency services swung into action to deal with the horrific crisis and its aftermath.

I am pleased to be here today to speak at your conference. The opportunity to address university staff at this time every year is becoming something of a tradition, and it is one that I look forward to.

This conference has been a celebration. For a very few of us a special celebration this week of 20 years in Parliament, for all of us of two years in government. One year from now we need to be celebrating the future as we begin the second term of a Labour led government.

It is hard to believe that a year has passed since we last met as a Labour Party Conference in Wellington.
