I came across an account of a letter the other day, and its irony is so rich I want to share it with you.
It was from the British Government, in 1948. John Strachey, the Minister of Food, was expressing disappointment that the New Zealand Dairy Products Marketing Commission only planned to export 97 per cent of the coming season's international butter sales to Britain. A mere 97 per cent.
