This settlement enables the people of Te Roroa to look forward with anticipation, and to view the years ahead with optimism and enthusiasm. It provides them with a platform to grow and develop. This settlement establishes relationships to ensure they are involved in decision-making that affects them, and it returns land to them from which they have been separated for too long.

Madame Speaker,

With the lakes settlement now finalised and the lands settlement moving through its final stages the future is bright for the people of Te Arawa. It is my hope that the iwi will go from strength to strength and become an even greater force.

The passage of this Settlement Bill represents the final steps of a long and arduous journey for Ngati Mutunga to have their claims properly heard, accepted, and addressed.

The formal Crown apology is an integral part of this settlement package, as it will allow your people to begin the slow healing process, and repair the relationship that has suffered from Crown wrongdoings over the last 160 years.

This document, together with the Crown’s acknowledgments of its breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi, is an important step in restoring the Crown’s relationship with Ngati Whatua o Orakei and the honour of the Crown.

Title to Rotorua lakes to return to Te Arawa.

The Te Arawa Lakes Settlement Bill will settle all historical claims of Te Arawa relating to 14 lakes around Rotorua and gives effect to the Deed of Settlement, signed in December 2004.

A new chapter in the relationship between Te Roroa and the Crown, as they celebrate the settlement of historical claims for breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi.
