Thank you to Alastair McIntosh for his introduction, and for inviting me to start this vintage Vauxhall tour of the South Island.

A fantastic three weeks lie ahead of you, and this is a great city from which to set out on your journey.
I know many of you have been in Christchurch for some days and you will have been soaking up the wonderful history this city has to offer, from the glorious buildings in and around the Arts Centre, to the city’s famous transport m odes --- notably the tram and, of course, the punt down the Avon River.

It is difficult to think of a more positive assignment for my first official transport engagement of the year than to be here at Fairfield Intermediate officially launching slower speed zones for Hamilton’s schools.

Thank you very much for inviting me to join you. I have taken a very close and personal interest in Hamilton’s campaign for 40km zones around schools. In terms of relative transport priorities, “switching on” safety around schools must be right up there at the top of any list.
