First step to settling Nga Rauru Kitahi claims begins in parliament

I stand to support the Ngati Tama Claims Settlement Bill, and I say so knowing that a number of issues have arisen during the settlement process. I want to say that the resolution of those issues lies with Ngâti Tama. This is its bill.

Kia ora. Whilst I stand to speak in the estimates debate about Vote Treaty Negotiations, I want to take a little time to acknowledge the valedictory speech made by Graham Kelly prior to the dinner break, to wish him and his family the best in the years ahead of them, and to thank him for his comments about his experiences in this Parliament. So to him and his family I say ngâ manaakitanga.

Second Reading Speech

It is a pleasure once again to meet with descendants of the two great ancestral waka - Te Arawa and Mataatua. Present today are members of the iwi of Ngati Tuwharetoa, Te Arawa, Tuhoe, Ngati Manawa and Ngati Whare.

Mr Speaker I move that Ngati Ruanui Claims Settlement Bill be now read a second time.

I acknowledge that before me I have representatives of two great waka - Te Arawa and Mataatua. These include the iwi of Tuwharetoa, Te Arawa, Tuhoe, Ngati Whare and Ngati Manawa.
