Thank you for coming along this morning. I would like to acknowledge the Commissioner of Police Rob Robinson; Senior Constable Glyn Cunningham; and other police personnel.

Thanks for the invitation to address this conference. It provides an opportunity to place on record my appreciation for the achievements of Police over the last year and to flag some issues of continuing interest.

Thank you for inviting me to address the Asian Social Services Symposium today.

· Many thanks to Dinesh Patel and the organising committee of the Indian Cultural Society. I know that you have brought together a dynamic and enthusiastic group to organise this and other Indian cultural events.

I am going to stick to a subject you all know I am passionate about - the dedicated Highway Patrol - where it has come from, how it is doing and where it is going.

I have been asked to talk about a very important subject for policing in New Zealand - responsiveness to Maori.

Greetings to you all and thank you to the executive committee of the Assembly for inviting me to open the conference today.

I would like to thank the Problem Gambling Foundation for inviting me to speak at this conference.

It is a pleasure to be here today to address this joint session of the Forest and Rural Fire Association of New Zealand, and Australian Bushfire, Conferences

· Note that this is the Auckland Association's 101st Annual Conference
· Congrats on reaching 1st year of second century
· Congrats on very successful competitions run in January this year

I am pleased to see a good number of people participating in this important event. About 100 are registered from around the country.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Special greetings to the Mayor of Wellington, the Race Relations Conciliator, and the organisers from the Ethnic Council of Wellington.

Community policing is a key strategic direction for Policing under this Government. I have been pleased as I travel around New Zealand to come across more and more examples of Police working with their communities and relevant agencies as they strive to get tough on crime.

I would like to acknowledge the Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Helen Clark; the New Zealand Federation of Ethnic Councils; the Race Relations Conciliator; my fellow Parliamentary colleagues; members of the diplomatic community and other invited guests.

· I am pleased to be here to witness the latest launch of the Highway Patrol here in Northland.

Today we are here to explore the issue of employment opportunities for skilled migrants job seekers in the Waikato region. I am here this morning, in my capacity as the Minister for Ethnic Affairs, to discuss this important matter.
