Good morning and welcome to you all – students, nurses and doctors.
Many of you have travelled a long way to be here, particularly the Australian visitors and the two guest speakers, Dr Ian Stiell from Canada and Dr Mike Clancy from the United Kingdom. I hope you all enjoy your stay in New Zealand, and in my home city of Wellington.

It’s a pleasure to be here in Johnsonville to be part of the national launch of the National Heart Foundation’s Healthy Heart Award programme.

Thank you for the opportunity to speak today. I would like to welcome you all here to Te Papa, and to say how pleased I am to be launching this document Nurse Practitioners in New Zealand.

I am particularly pleased to be opening your biennial conference given the significant events that have occurred in terms of the maternity sector, and midwifery in particular, since the last time you met.

As you all know, problems with fertility can be a significant emotional and social burden. Infertility can reduce the quality of life for couples who wish to have children.
