Thanks for the invitation to address this conference. It provides an opportunity to place on record my appreciation for the achievements of Police over the last year and to flag some issues of continuing interest.

I am going to stick to a subject you all know I am passionate about - the dedicated Highway Patrol - where it has come from, how it is doing and where it is going.

I have been asked to talk about a very important subject for policing in New Zealand - responsiveness to Maori.

Community policing is a key strategic direction for Policing under this Government. I have been pleased as I travel around New Zealand to come across more and more examples of Police working with their communities and relevant agencies as they strive to get tough on crime.

· I am pleased to be here to witness the latest launch of the Highway Patrol here in Northland.

It is indeed great to be here in Kaiapoi to officially open the new Kaiapoi Police Station
