Transport Minister Simon Bridges and ACC Minister Michael Woodhouse have welcomed an initiative for the development of a national cycling education system aimed at getting more kids riding bikes safely.

Transport Minister Simon Bridges announced today that the Transport Agency and ACC have approved an initial $2.7 million of funding to establish the system by June 2018. The total investment including delivery of cycling education is expected to be around $24 million over four years.

Finance Minister Steven Joyce and ACC Minister Michael Woodhouse have today announced the sale of FairWay Resolution from Crown ownership to employee ownership with effect from July this year.

“Employee-ownership is a successful business model that will give staff a greater role in the future direction of the company,” Mr Joyce says.

“The change in ownership will also reflect positively in the way staff work, which has a direct flow on for clients.”

Leona Murphy joins the board from today for a three year term.

“Ms Murphy will bring valuable skills to the ACC board, she has a strong background in large scale business transformation, digital IT and insurance claims management,” Mr Woodhouse says.

The launch of national guiding principles for preventing and managing pressure injuries is being welcomed by Health Minister Jonathan Coleman, Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne and ACC Minister Michael Woodhouse.

“It’s estimated that every year around 55,000 people suffer from pressure injuries, with more than 3000 of these causing significant harm,” says Dr Coleman.

ACC is increasing its investment in the RugbySmart programme to $7 million over the next four years with the aim of reducing injuries in our national sport, says ACC Minister Michael Woodhouse.

“An investment by ACC of $7 million over the next four years will enable a significant expansion of the RugbySmart programme and will focus on improving players’ preparation for our national sport and reducing injuries,” Mr Woodhouse says.

A government-funded trial of an Air Desk that will centralise the handling of the country’s emergency air ambulance callouts is to commence today.

ACC Minister, Hon Michael Woodhouse and Associate Minister of Health, Hon Peter Dunne announced today that the Ministry of Health and ACC are each providing half of the $591,000 per annum funding for the two-year pilot. The trial funds an air desk with 15 hours a day, 7 days a week coverage to prove that the concept will meet its objectives.

Acting ACC Minister Nathan Guy today confirmed the ACC levy rates for the 2017/18 and 2018/19 years.

“There will be reductions totalling $126.2 million per annum to work and motor vehicle levies, while the earners’ levy will remain unchanged,” says Mr Guy.

“These reductions follow over $2 billion of ACC levy cuts made under this Government since 2012.

Acting ACC Minister Nathan Guy today welcomed the start of ACC’s public levy consultation process.

“This is an opportunity for New Zealanders to share their views about levies and other aspects of the ACC scheme,” says Mr Guy.

The process involves ACC releasing proposed levy rates, then after considering feedback the ACC Board recommends rates to the Government, which makes the final decision on levies.

All 20 recommendations contained in an independent report on ACC dispute resolution processes will be addressed, Acting ACC Minister Nathan Guy announced today.

“It’s vital that the system for challenging ACC decisions is fair, robust, timely and cost-effective,” says Mr Guy.

“Last year the advocacy group Acclaim Otago released its own report which identified issues with current accident compensation dispute resolution processes.

A new strategy aimed at reducing motorcycle crashes and improving rider safety has been welcomed by Acting ACC Minister Nathan Guy.

“ACC sees first-hand the impact of motorcycle crashes, so this is about stepping up work to prevent crashes from happening in the first place,” says Mr Guy.

The strategy is a joint initiative between ACC and the Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council (MSAC). The Council represents the motorcycling community and advises ACC on initiatives that will make motorcycling safer on New Zealand roads.

ACC Minister Nikki Kaye today announced the appointment of Rachel Farrant to the board of Crown company Fairway Resolution Ltd, effective from 1 September 2016.

“Ms Farrant is a Wellington-based chartered accountant and a partner at accounting and business advisory network BDO, where she holds the role of HR Director,” says Ms Kaye.

“She has specific experience in audit and business advisory services, working with a wide range of clients in the retail, professional services, not-for-profit and government sectors.

A national registry which goes live today will lead to better services and better care and support for people living with a spinal cord impairment, say Health Minister Jonathan Coleman and ACC Minister Nikki Kaye.

“This registry will collect and record a wide range of information about people throughout their lifetime, from the moment they’re affected by a spinal cord impairment,” says Dr Coleman.

Both Ministers visited Auckland Hospital this morning to celebrate the investment and visit an older persons’ health ward.

ACC Minister Nikki Kaye has welcomed a new, ongoing partnership between ACC and Plunket aimed at helping to reduce the number of injuries to children aged under five years.

“ACC will invest $2.3 million over five years to support Plunket to further develop their injury prevention capabilities, and deliver education and initiatives to support parents to reduce the number and severity of injuries to young children,” says Ms Kaye.

Each year, more than 110,000 children aged under five years are injured at home and in the wider community.

ACC Minister Nikki Kaye today confirmed the new ACC annual licence levies that owners of light vehicles (cars, vans, utes and SUVs) will pay from 1 July 2016, as well as refinements to the vehicle risk rating system used to calculate these levies.

The ACC annual licence levy is part of the vehicle licensing (‘rego’) fee paid when you register or relicense a vehicle.

“From 1 July, the average motor vehicle levy, which includes the annual licence levy and petrol levy, will reduce from around $195 to around $130 per vehicle,” says Ms Kaye.

ACC Minister Nikki Kaye today confirmed the Government’s new funding policy for ACC, and announced that ACC levies will now be set every two years, rather than annually.

The funding policy is the latest in a number of improvements implemented as part of the Accident Compensation (Financial Responsibility and Transparency) Amendment Act, which came into force in September 2015.

ACC Minister Nikki Kaye has welcomed the results of a Research New Zealand survey which shows that public trust and confidence in ACC has reached a new high.

“The survey shows that 61 per cent of New Zealanders surveyed in the 12 months to March 2016 have full trust and confidence in ACC, up from 56 per cent in the previous 12 months, and the result for the last quarter is 64 per cent, which is the highest result since the survey began in 2004,” says Ms Kaye.
