Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew has welcomed the announcement of the teams who will take part in a pilot programme to support new social enterprise start-ups.

“The successful 11 teams are organisations with social or environmental goals which use commercial models to generate income,” says Mrs Goodhew.

The Ākina Foundation’s social enterprise accelerator pilot, Launchpad, is co-funded by the Department of Internal Affairs and Contact Energy. The final 11 teams were chosen from 134 applications.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew has today announced that $502,000 in grants will be given to community groups reliant on volunteers.

The Support for Volunteering Fund is distributed annually to organisations which demonstrate that they are working to promote and support volunteering.

“Over a million New Zealanders are involved in some form of voluntary work in their communities. These volunteers are the backbone of our communities,” says Mrs Goodhew.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew has announced that 12 projects have been selected for this year’s Community Development Scheme.

“The scheme helps fund projects where communities have identified and found solutions to their own local issues,” says Mrs Goodhew.

“Community groups are the backbone of our sports and social groups, emergency service organisations, conservation, and the arts and cultural sector. These institutions, and the people who are part of them, make a significant contribution to New Zealand society and the economy,” says Mrs Goodhew.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew is inviting applications for the 2015 Community Internship Programme (CIP).

“This programme provides a chance for experienced professionals to contribute to a community organisation and to increase understanding and co-operation between the private, public and community sectors,” says Mrs Goodhew.

“It funds hapū, iwi or community groups with clearly identified needs to employ skilled professionals as interns for 12 months part-time or three to six months full-time.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew has today encouraged New Zealanders to take part in National Volunteer Week.

“This is a week, co-ordinated annually by Volunteering New Zealand (VNZ), which is set aside to celebrate the contribution volunteers make in their communities,” says Mrs Goodhew.

This year’s theme is “Naku te rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te tangata.” Translated as “With your contribution and my contribution the people will live.”

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew is calling for applications for the 2015 Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowships.

“This is the 50th anniversary of the fellowship scheme established to honour Sir Winston Churchill who believed world peace and greater international understanding could be promoted through ordinary people travelling to other countries and experiencing other cultures,” says Mrs Goodhew.

“CommunityNet Aotearoa draws together the huge variety of resources available to this sector to better support groups,” says Mrs Goodhew.

“The Community Internship Programme (CIP) funds hapū, iwi or community groups to employ skilled professionals as interns to help them meet clearly identified objectives,” says Mrs Goodhew.

“The programme focuses on skill-sharing and the exchange of knowledge between sectors, while building on-going relationships which continue after an internship ends.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew has this evening congratulated Mistletoe Bay Trust on winning the supreme award at the Trustpower National Community Awards and the Neurological Foundation Southern Chair of Neurosurgery for receiving the runner-up award.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew is calling for applications for this year’s Support for Volunteering Fund.

“The fund provides over $502,000 each year to projects and organisations that promote and support volunteering in New Zealand,” says Mrs Goodhew.

“The funding is divided between Volunteering New Zealand, regional volunteer centres and selected projects in the volunteer sector.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew is encouraging generous New Zealanders to research organisations before donating to them.

“It is important when giving donations to take some simple steps to make sure your money is going to a legitimate charity,” Mrs Goodhew says.

“There are 26,891 registered charities in New Zealand managing an asset base of $40 billion. Together they have an annual income of $14.7 billion – of which 7.5 per cent comes from donations, equating to around $1.1 billion.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew is encouraging people to get involved in their local Community Organisation Grants Scheme (COGS).

“COGS is a government-funded community-driven scheme to support community groups with a total of $12.5 million to distribute throughout New Zealand.

“The members of New Zealand’s 37 local distribution committees assess funding applications and decide which non-profit community organisation will receive a grant,” Mrs Goodhew says.

“I congratulate the Trust on this significant milestone, it is a testament to its enduring success,” says Mrs Goodhew.

“The Trust was established in 1965 based on the belief of Sir Winston Churchill that enormous good would come from ordinary people experiencing other cultures.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew today announced the recipients of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowships for 2014.

“I congratulate all the recipients of this year’s Fellowships and wish them successful and productive study trips,” says Mrs Goodhew.

“The Trust aims to help New Zealanders from all walks of life to travel overseas and bring back new insights and understanding that will enrich their community and, ultimately, New Zealand as a whole.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew today announced the start of a new funding round for the Community Development Scheme. 

“The fund enables groups to employ a community development project worker to help them identify and respond to local issues,” says Mrs Goodhew.

During each funding round, applications for the scheme are invited from community organisations, hapū, and iwi based in specific areas.

Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector Jo Goodhew today acknowledged 25 Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellows at a special awards ceremony held at Government House.

“Today’s event is a celebration of the achievements of the Fellows who have completed their travel and research reports in the last two years,” said Mrs Goodhew.

The ceremony was hosted by the Patron of the Trust, His Excellency, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, Governor-General of New Zealand.

Charities with annual expenditure of $500,000 or more will be required to have their financial statements reviewed by a qualified accountant, Minister of Commerce Craig Foss and Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew announced today.

Charities with annual expenditure over $1 million will be required to have their financial statements audited.

“These changes will improve the quality of financial reporting among charities and result in greater confidence that financial statements are reliable,” says Mr Foss.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew today announced that grants totalling over $500,000 have been made to community organisations to promote and support volunteering.

“The grants were made through the Support for Volunteering Fund which aims to enable new and innovative approaches to the development and support of volunteering,” Mrs Goodhew says.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew has announced that two new High Tech Youth Network studios will be established in Dunedin South and Penrose in Auckland.

“I am very pleased that the $1.9 million provided in Budget 2013 will enable the High Tech Youth Network to develop these two new studios and to continue to support young people enrolled at existing studios,” Mrs Goodhew said.
