The government's Pacific Wave strategy has achieved its goal of halving Pacific unemployment in Auckland in just two years.

The result is a stunning achievement for the Pacific community Social Development and Employment Minister Steve Maharey and Associate Social Development Minister Taito Phillip Field said today.

The Auckland Pacific Youth Development Strategy is a bold and visionary document. It aims to deliver positive life-change and affirmation for all Pacific youth in Auckland, through education and employment. An enormous amount of work has gone into the Strategy’s development, and I’m tremendously excited about its potential to deliver real and positive change to Auckland’s Pacific youth population.

As Associate Minister for Social Development, I’m delighted to join you for today’s graduation of level one and two in the National Certificate in Food and Related Products Processing.

On 28 October 2004, Labour’s Pacific Caucus Committee visited two local Pacific-focused social service providers in South Auckland. This was part of their ongoing effort to keep in touch with their local pacific communities.

“Work and Income’s Pacific Wave strategy has seen the number of Pacific people on Unemployment Benefit in Auckland reduced by a third,” said Taito Phillip Field, Associate Minister for Social Development and Employment today.

Associate Minister for Social Development and Employment the Hon Taito Phillip Field today launched the Ministry of Social Development - Work and Income Pacific Wave strategy at the Counties Manukau Regional Skills and Employment Forum in Mangere.

More than 100 community, local, and central government representatives are gathering in Manukau City on 9 May to discuss how to improve the delivery of services to Pacific communities.
