Thank you for the opportunity to be part of the opening of this wonderful new facility and apologies from Hon Annette King, who was originally due to be here, but who was unable to be here today.

Good morning, and thank you for inviting me to this celebration of Work Peninsula’s secondment programme.

Welcome to the back of the House. I’m sure that many people suspect that politicians constantly wine and dine themselves to excess, but I can assure you that the opposite is usually true these days.

The theme of this conference makes it one of the most important health forums that will be held in New Zealand this year.
In fact, the issues that will be canvassed during this conference go to the heart of where the Labour-Alliance Government wishes to take the public health system.

Thank you very much for inviting me to share this special opening ceremony with you today, and for inviting me back to a city that was a happy home for me for almost three years in the 1990s.
