Government Ministers, steel industry and union leaders have jointly expressed their strong resolve to prevent New Zealand’s steel industry from being harmed by surges in steel imports.

Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderton welcomed Customs’ newest partner in the innovative FrontLine programme today in Christchurch.

Cameron Air & Seafreight Ltd is the first South Island based freight forwarding company to join the FrontLine initiative.

The new Customs mobile x-ray machine which stands at 1.65 m will be put through its paces by Acting Minister of Customs Jim Anderton today as he screens express cargo.

“Three million dollars per annum of new funding for Customs will be used to help prevent New Zealand being used as a base for terrorism overseas or as a transit point for international terrorism,” says Acting Customs Minister Jim Anderton.

“The NZ Customs Service will soon have the first mobile x-ray machine of its type in the country which will help combat terrorism and strengthen our international borders”, the Acting Minister of Customs Jim Anderton announced today: International Customs Day.

The Minister of Customs, Jim Anderton, says the new look-navy fleet which will have an additional multi-role vessel, at least two offshore patrol vessels, and four or five inshore patrol vessels will allow Customs to do an even better job protecting our borders.
