Conservation Minister Dr Nick Smith and Associate Minister Peter Dunne today announced the appointment of 11 members to the inaugural Game Animal Council.

“The new Game Animal Council is about giving hunters of deer, tahr, chamois and pigs an active voice in the management of their recreation. These appointments include a diverse range of interests in hunting and a geographic spread across the country,” Dr Smith says.

Associate Conservation Minister Peter Dunne has welcomed a High Court judgement dismissing a claim that he was biased in his approach to heli-hunting.

“While no Minister ever wants a judicial review of their decisions, I was always confident that the integrity and reasonableness of the decisions I made would stand up to scrutiny.

“The judgement is very clear-cut and my decisions were vindicated by Justice Kos on every point,” Mr Dunne said.

Associate Minister of Conservation Peter Dunne has welcomed the report of the Local Government and Environment Select Committee on the Game Animal Council Bill sent back to the House today.

“I thank the select committee and particularly the Chair, Nicky Wagner, for their work on this Bill and I look forward to successfully shepherding it through its remaining stages during the first half of next year,” Mr Dunne said.

Five aerially assisted trophy hunting (AATH) concessions for the Hooker-Landsborough, Adams and Olivine Wilderness Areas are to be granted by Associate Conservation Minister Peter Dunne.

They are being granted under section 17Q of the Conservation Act and section 22 of the Wild Animal Control Act.

Mr Dunne said he was obliged to consider the five applications within the framework of current legislation and has taken into account the recent public submission process.

Associate Conservation Minister and UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne today led legislation for a Game Animal Council to its First Reading in Parliament, delivering on a key provision of the party’s confidence and supply agreement with National.

“This Bill is a key part of UnitedFuture’s confidence and supply agreement and I am delighted we have been able to deliver on it so early in the parliamentary term,” Mr Dunne said.

I propose to refer the Bill to the Local Government and Environment Committee.

This Bill delivers on the Government’s 2008 confidence and supply agreement with UnitedFuture to “proceed with the establishment of a Big Game Hunting Council as part of a national wild game management strategy with a view to it becoming a statutory authority”.
