Results released today show good progress is being made to achieve the Government’s Better Public Services targets, say social sector Ministers Tony Ryall, Paula Bennett and Hekia Parata.

“This National-led Government is committed to ensuring New Zealand children are getting a better start in life,” Health Minister Tony Ryall says.

Health Minister Tony Ryall and Education Minister Hekia Parata have today launched a new guide designed to help deliver better health services for secondary school students.

“Evidence shows quality school health services improve student wellbeing – which leads to better learning and helps young New Zealanders reach their full potential,” says Mr Ryall.

“The new Youth Health Care in Secondary Schools framework is a practical guide to assist those planning, funding or providing primary health care services in secondary schools.”

The Government wants to work with the Porirua community to reduce the number of local people being admitted to Wellington Hospital with preventable conditions.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says patients with avoidable admissions coming into Wellington Hospital, are almost twice as likely to come from Porirua as the other areas that Capital and Coast DHB is serving, and the Government wants to focus on this disparity.

“Too many children are let down, abused or neglected. We know there is a link between early childhood experiences and poor health, substance abuse, poor educational outcomes and unemployment in adulthood,” Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says.
