Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye has announced a decision to continue $4.5 million of funding so 46 service providers can continue working with young New Zealanders.

“This funding is to support youth service providers to deliver services to improve the lives of young people,” Ms Kaye says.

“These services include entrepreneurial skills, mentoring, and supporting young people to achieve through leadership initiatives.

Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye today announced a further 80 schools are being invited to upgrade their IT networks so they can increase digital learning and teaching opportunities.

“The 80 schools will take the number of schools that are part of the Ministry of Educations’ School Network Upgrade Project (SNUP) to just over 1400, which is more than half of all eligible state and state-integrated schools,” Ms Kaye said.

SNUP upgrades the wiring infrastructure and internal data networks of schools.

Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye announced that from today the Ministry of Youth Development will be accepting applications to the Youth Development Partnership Fund from city and district councils.

There is a total of $889,000 for allocation with a minimum of $10,000 and a maximum of $70,000 per project.

“This fund supports councils working with young people to develop the skills, knowledge, and experience to participate confidently in their communities,” Ms Kaye said.

Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye today welcomed the first progress report on the National Civil Defence Emergency Management Strategy.

“Overall, the report shows that good progress that has been made in the past five years in building New Zealand’s resilience and in the capability to manage civil defence emergencies,” Ms Kaye said.

“The report, which was delayed for two years as a result of the Canterbury earthquakes, also looks ahead to future challenges and identifies improvements.

A rule change will make the school bus run easier for some parents with children from the same family no longer being separated, Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye said today.

“The change increases eligibility for school transport assistance to when a student reaches Year 9 (the first year of secondary school), rather than have a cut-off based on age 10,” Ms Kaye said.

A payment of nearly $31 million for civil defence emergency response costs related to the Canterbury earthquakes has been paid to the Christchurch City Council, Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye says.

This payment brings the total Government contribution paid to the Christchurch City Council to more than $208 million in response to the September 2010 and February, June and December 2011 earthquakes.

Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye said today she will set up a reference group to strengthen special education school transport assistance (SESTA) services and improve tender and contract processes.

“My goal is to ensure that government provides safe and reliable services for families and children who use special education transport services,” Ms Kaye says.

“I believe it is important that these children and young people, particularly those with very high needs, have reliable services designed and delivered for their needs.
