New Zealand’s international education industry has seen its strongest January to April enrolment period on record with an 8 per cent increase, or an additional 5,100 international student enrolments on the same period last year.

“Sustained hard work by the whole sector has halted a two year decline in student enrolments and resulted in record number of students choosing New Zealand as their study destination,” Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce says.

Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce today welcomed the release of the 2013 educational performance data for Industry Training Organisations (ITOs), which show solid improvements in the performance of their trainees and apprentices.

“The big consolidation of the ITO sector from 39 down to 13 ITOs has resulted in larger organisations delivering better services for trainees and employers,” Mr Joyce says.

The tertiary education sector continued to produce strong educational performance in 2013, Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister, Steven Joyce says.

The Tertiary Education Commission today released the 2013 Education Performance Indicators (EPIs) for providers receiving Student Achievement Component (SAC) funding which shows performance against the four EPIs of course completion rates; qualification completion rates; student progression at levels 1-4; and student retention.

Unemployment has fallen to 5.6 per cent – its lowest level since the March 2009 quarter.

Today’s Household Labour Force Survey shows the number of people employed increased by 83,000 over the last year.

A new online tool to help educators lift the literacy and numeracy skills of young New Zealanders was launched in Wellington today at the National Symposium for Literacy and Numeracy for Adults by Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, and Employment Steven Joyce.

The “Youth Option” for the Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment Tool is tailored for young learners between the ages of 15 and 25. The Assessment Tool is the key diagnostic tool of literacy and numeracy competency for adults in New Zealand.

Indian students with a passion for sporting excellence are being encouraged to apply for new scholarships to study top level programmes at New Zealand tertiary institutions. 

“With New Zealand co-hosting the Cricket World Cup next year, this scholarship will help raise awareness of New Zealand education generally and our expertise in sport,” Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Steven Joyce says.

New Zealand students completed a record number of undergraduate degree qualifications in 2013, according to new data released today by the Ministry of Education.

In 2013, 25,800 domestic students completed bachelors degrees, an increase of around 400 on the 25,400 who completed degrees in 2012, and 24 per cent higher than the 20,800 who graduated in 2008.

Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce and Education Minister Hekia Parata today announced the release of the Creative Industries Vocational Pathway at the Te Ara Whakamana: Pathways, Transitions and Bridges to Tertiary Education Forum 2014 in Wellington.

The Creative Industries Pathway is the sixth in a series of pathways designed to help students select subjects at both senior secondary school and in foundation-level tertiary education in vocational areas that interest them.

Joint research grants worth $460,000 have been awarded to seven collaborative research projects between New Zealand and Indian universities, Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce announced today.
