The Crown has signed a Deed of Settlement with Ngatikahu ki Whangaroa settling the iwi’s historical Treaty of Waitangi claims, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson announced today.

Ngatikahu ki Whangaroa is a northern iwi of approximately 2,500 people whose area of interest lies between the Whangaroa and Mangonui Harbours in the Far North.

The Crown has signed an agreement in principle with Ngaati Hinerangi to settle its historical Treaty of Waitangi claims, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson announced today.

Ngaati Hinerangi is an iwi from the Tainui waka confederation whose area of interest extends from Matamata to the Western Bay of Plenty and encompasses the Kaimai Range.

The Crown has signed a deed of settlement with Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki at Umupuia Marae, Maraetai in Auckland, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson announced today.

“The deed settles the historical grievances of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki and includes an acknowledgement and apology for the acts, omissions and historical breaches of the Treaty committed by the Crown,” Mr Finlayson said.

The Crown has signed a Deed of Settlement with Heretaunga Tamatea settling the iwi’s historical Treaty of Waitangi claims, Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson announced today.

The settlement provides acknowledgements, an apology and redress for the Crown’s past actions and omissions, including large scale land purchasing that left Heretaunga Tamatea virtually landless.

Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson has welcomed a leading law firm’s decision to provide a scholarship to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1975 Land March.

Buddle Findlay has agreed to offer a scholarship to one third or fourth year Māori law student to be selected from across New Zealand. In addition to covering tuition fees, as part of the scholarship, Buddle Findlay will offer the student a position in its summer clerk programme.

Four Te Hiku iwi will have their Treaty settlements enacted into law following the successful third reading of the Te Hiku Claims Settlement Bill, Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson announced today.

“Ngāti Kuri, Te Aupōuri, NgāiTakoto and Te Rarawa will now have their full and final settlements with the Crown enshrined in law,” Mr Finlayson said. “Each settlement acknowledges, apologises for and makes significant redress toward righting wrongs of the past.”

The Te Kawerau ā Maki Claims Settlement Bill passed its third and final reading today, Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson announced.

When enacted, the bill will give effect to the deed of settlement which Te Kawerau ā Maki and the Crown signed on 22 February 2014.

The Hawke’s Bay Regional Planning Committee Bill passed its third reading in the House today, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson announced.

“When enacted, this bill will give effect to the Crown’s commitment, made in the Ngāti Pāhauwera Deed of Settlement and recorded in the Maungaharuru-Tangitū Deed of Settlement, to work with iwi and hapū to establish a joint Māori-Council body in the Hawke’s Bay,” Mr Finlayson said.

The Hineuru Claims Settlement Bill and the Ngāruahine Claims Settlement Bill passed their first readings today in extended sitting hours, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson announced.

When enacted, the bills will give effect to the deeds of settlement signed between Hineuru and the Crown on 2 April 2015 and Ngāruahine and the Crown on 1 August 2014.

“The government is making great progress towards settling historical Treaty grievances, signing 48 deeds of settlement in the last six years,” Mr Finlayson said.

The Crown and the Tūhoronuku Independent Mandated Authority (Tūhoronuku IMA) have signed Terms of Negotiation and are ready to begin negotiating a Treaty settlement for the benefit of all Ngāpuhi, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson announced today.

Tūhoronuku IMA is the mandated representative of Ngāpuhi, New Zealand’s largest iwi, for Treaty of Waitangi settlement negotiations.

The Crown has purchased one of the most significant battle sites of the New Zealand Wars, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson announced today.

“We are pleased we could purchase this very significant site which is of great historical and cultural importance to the iwi who fought at the Battle of Ōrākau,” Mr Finlayson said.

The Ōrākau property near Kihikihi, Te Awamutu, was likely the site of a major battle between Māori and the Crown in 1864. Māori sustained many casualties and the site is recorded as a wāhi tapu area.

The Crown has signed a deed of settlement for all outstanding historical Treaty claims with Hineuru at Parliament, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson announced today.

Hineuru is an iwi based northwest of Napier in the Hawke’s Bay region. Hineuru’s historical claims relate primarily to war and raupatu, the operation of the native land laws, Crown land purchasing and virtual landlessness and its impacts.

Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson today delivered the Crown’s formal apology to Ngāruahine for historical breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi.

The apology was delivered in Hokitika at the conclusion of Ngāruahine’s week-long Hikoi ki Te Waipounamu to honour the memory of the 405 members of those Ngāruahine tupuna who were transported to and detained in the South Island by the Crown after the Taranaki Wars.

The Crown has signed an agreement in principle with Ngāti Tūwharetoa towards settling their historical Treaty of Waitangi claims, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson announced today.

Ngāti Tūwharetoa is a large iwi of around 35,000 people with an area of interest centred around Lake Taupo and the central plateau.
