Social Services and Employment Minister Steve Maharey and Rural Affairs Minister Jim Sutton said today the Heartland initiative aimed to improve face to face' contact with government agencies for people in rural areas.

The initiative will improve government service delivery through government staff synchronising their visits to remote towns once or twice a month as part of an "outreach" service, and through the establishment of or participation in service centres in some smaller provincial towns.

Philanthropic trusts contributed more than $120 million last year to charitable organisations, education initiatives, the arts and sporting programmes and the Government wants to see the sector better recognised for its efforts, Community and Voluntary

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Steve Maharey this afternoon announced the members of a new working group which will develop the framework for an agreement between the Government and the community and voluntary sector.

Over the last decade, 'Community' seemed to become a dirty word. In fact, 'community' practically disappeared from policy makers lexicon, as they attributed every benefit or every ill to the individual or the family.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Steve Maharey said he was pleased with the high level of interest being shown in the Government's plans to develop an agreement with the voluntary sector.
