The National Library has an exciting future with many challenges. It continues to show the ability to engage in issues and the needs of its communities.

Giving New Zealanders better access to their cultural heritage – wherever it is held – is a key challenge for cultural memory institutions. Museums, galleries, archives and libraries must come to terms with a growing demand from users keen to use new technologies to explore the treasure troves of information they hold.

The bill addresses shortcomings in the current law and ensures that this important national institution will continue to collect, preserve, protect and make accessible the nation’s documentary heritage .
