Introduction

Good morning and welcome. It’s great to be back in Otara this morning for the opening of this Simple House.

Last time I was here, in March, I was driving a bob cat and turning the first sod. Many of you here today will have been at that event and I’m sure you’ll agree it’s great to be able to see, and walk around, the finished house.

Good morning everybody – it is my pleasure to be here this morning to open SmartGate at Christchurch Airport. This technology will improve the travel experience for millions of New Zealanders and Australians.

In fact in the last year, more than 2 million Australian and New Zealanders crossed the Tasman. In the year ended last August 530,000 New Zealand and Australian passport holders arrived at Christchurch Airport.

Over the last 170 years Customs has played a vital role in securing our borders and keeping New Zealand, and New Zealanders safe.

Customs also plays a significant role in New Zealand's global trade – making sure goods that enter New Zealand do so in accordance with our laws and that our exports do not pose a threat to other countries.

I spoke to many of you in February when I launched the discussion document, at the beginning of the formal consultation phase for the Building Act review.

I am very pleased to be back in Auckland today to formally announce the significant changes the Government will be making as a result of the review.

But first I want to thank all of you for your contributions to this process.

Good morning.  Thank you for having me along today, and for the opportunity to address your group.

The last time I spoke to you was November last year.  At that time, Government was launching a huge programme of work aimed at helping to set the building sector right, and get New Zealand on the path to economic recovery.

Thank you for the opportunity to close the formal business of your conference this year - although I note there's still the "tool racing" final to come, so I promise I won't keep you too long!

Good afternoon.  Thank you all for taking the time to join me. I am particularly grateful to the owners of this home for permitting us to be here today.

As you know, this Government is determined to improve productivity across the economy which is why we embarked on a major regulatory review programme. Without compromising quality or safety we want to get rid of unnecessary red tape. It's about cutting costs - without cutting corners.
