Sport and Recreation Minister Murray McCully has welcomed the announcement that the All Blacks have set a date to play Manu Samoa in Apia in 2015.

“Our shared passion for the game of rugby binds New Zealanders and Pacific people together,” Mr McCully says.

Sport and Recreation Minister Murray McCully today welcomed the first reading of the Crimes (Match-fixing) Amendment Bill.

The Bill is designed to protect the integrity of New Zealand Sport by making match-fixing a form of deception under section 240 of the Crimes Act – the offence of obtaining a benefit or causing a loss by deception.

“Match-fixing is a growing problem internationally and has been described as the number one threat to the integrity, value and growth of sport,” Mr McCully says.

Sport and Recreation Minister Murray McCully today announced the formation of a senior officials’ inter-agency group and the implementation of a national match fixing policy to safeguard New Zealand sport.

The measures were recommended by a Sport NZ-led report into the implications of the Australian Crime Commission investigation linking organised crime and banned substances to some Australian sporting codes.

“The report found no evidence of widespread drug use or organised crime in New Zealand sport,” Mr McCully says.

Sport and Recreation Minister Murray McCully says he is pleased by the decision to proceed with the redevelopment of Hagley Oval as it clears the way for Christchurch to host the opening match and festivities of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

The Environment Court today granted resource consent for a significant redevelopment of the Oval.

Hagley Oval will host the opening festivities, the opening match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, as well as matches featuring Pakistan, England and the West Indies.

“Given this is a co-hosted event with Australia, I am delighted with the quality of fixtures allocated to New Zealand,” Mr McCully says.

Sport and Recreation Minister Murray McCully today announced the appointment of former Court of Appeal Judge Hon Sir Bruce Robertson as chair of the Sports Tribunal of New Zealand.

“Sir Bruce’s judicial expertise and previous Tribunal experience as deputy chair will serve him well in this new role,” Mr McCully says.

Sir Bruce also has considerable experience in sport administration, particularly in rugby. He will be supported by newly appointed deputy chair James Farmer QC and reappointed deputy chair Alan Galbraith QC.

Sport and Recreation Minister Murray McCully today appointed former Silver Ferns and Black Ferns manager Jackie Barron to the board of Sport New Zealand.

“Mrs Barron is a seasoned educator and sports administrator with more than a decade of experience at the highest level of netball and women’s rugby,” Mr McCully says.

Mrs Barron managed the Black Ferns during their 2002 Women’s Rugby World Cup victory and has also managed the Silver Ferns, Southern Sting and New Zealand under 21 netball sides.

Sport Minister Murray McCully says the Australian Crime Commission report on Organised Crime and Drugs in Sport needs to be taken seriously on this side of the Tasman.

“I have asked Sport New Zealand, High Performance Sport NZ and Drug Free Sport NZ to report back to me on the implications of the Australian Crime Commission report released yesterday,” Mr McCully says.

“I have asked them to consult with the New Zealand Olympic Committee and any other relevant bodies in compiling their report.

Sport and Recreation Minister Murray McCully today named former High Court Judge Warwick Gendall as the next Chair of Drug Free Sport New Zealand.

“Justice Gendall’s legal expertise and experience as a sports administrator will be invaluable to the board of New Zealand’s sports drug agency,” Mr McCully says.

As a barrister, Justice Gendall was involved in a number of sport and drug cases. He also served as Chair of New Zealand Football Council, and has been a FIFA delegate and admissions inspector.

Foreign Affairs and Sport and Recreation Minister Murray McCully will travel to London today for the 2012 Olympic Games, and talks with British Foreign Secretary William Hague.

“The New Zealand Olympic team has gone into the games in very good shape. In the next few days some of our feature sports will come into the spotlight,” Mr McCully says.

“I look forward to seeing many of our athletes on the Olympic podium.”

Minister for Sport and Recreation Murray McCully has paid tribute to rugby legend Jock Hobbs following the news of his passing after a long battle with leukaemia.

"Jock Hobbs was one of nature's gentlemen. He was an outstanding sportsman, one of our greatest sporting administrators, a passionate New Zealander and a thoroughly decent human being," Mr McCully said.

"It is literally correct to say that had it not been for the roles that Jock played at a critical time, that professional rugby would not be the sport it is today.
