I'd like to welcome you to Parliament tonight and say a few quick words on how important your industry is to New Zealand.

It is a pleasure to be here today as Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism.

Good morning and thanks to the Chair of New Zealand Airports, Steve Fitzgerald, for inviting me to speak to you today.

This is a most appropriate time to be thinking about the theme of transitions.  Over the last week all of our communities have experienced a transition of varying degree.

Good morning everybody – it is my pleasure to be here this morning to open SmartGate at Christchurch Airport. This technology will improve the travel experience for millions of New Zealanders and Australians.

In fact in the last year, more than 2 million Australian and New Zealanders crossed the Tasman. In the year ended last August 530,000 New Zealand and Australian passport holders arrived at Christchurch Airport.
