Thank you so much for inviting me here to Te Pūtahitanga o Te Wai Pounamu’s first Hothouse weekend.  And thank you to our fine MCs, Rā Dallas and Sheree Waitoa, for making us all so welcome.

I have to admit that ever since your launch in July, I have talked about little else than the fresh new face of innovation that Te Pūtahitanga o Te Wai Pounamu represents. And so I want to firstly mihi to your Chair, Norm Dewes and the Board, to Lisa Tumahai, the Chair of Te Taumata and your dedicated staff.  

I have been so looking forward to being with you today, to celebrate the transformation that we see already evident in Te Pūtahitanga o Te Wai Pounamu.

It is the most powerful concept to think that all of our whānau here in Ōtautahi are simultaneously connected in time and concept with all the whānau gathering at launch events today at Murihiku, Ōtākou, Tai Poutini, Whakatū, and Wairau.

Tēnā tātou katoa.

Tēnā koutou Te Akitai, te mana whenua o tēnei rohe, ka nui te mihi ki a koutou.

Tainui waka, Waikato iwi ki te whare o Te Kāhui Ariki, ngā tāngata o Te Moana Nui a Kiwa.

I was a little bit thrown by the kōrero this morning.

Tenei te mihi ki a koutou katoa nga mana whenua o tenei whenua Tauranga Moana, me nga rangatira o Nga Pae o Te Maramatanga hoki.   Tena koutou, tena tatou katoa.

I acknowledge the iwi of Tauranga Moana, who have upheld the sacred expression of kaitiakitanga over your special landing places.

This is a great day for Otara - for South Auckland - for Aotearoa.

In making our way here to the land of Maniapoto, I reflected on the legacy begun in the late 1970s, by the movers and shakers of the day - Morehu Te Whare, Kingi Hetet, Koro Wetere, Daniel Te Kanawa – and the whānau that dreamed of a better day.

I’m delighted to be here today firstly to launch and celebrate the new name of your organisation ‘Safer Aotearoa Family Violence Prevention Network’ which has had its beginnings here in South Auckland. To the many volunteers who have supported this Network – from governance to community – for your tireless work in raising awareness and education with our whanau and aiga. Thank you for inviting me here today.

We want to congratulate the Hon David Carter as the Speaker-Elect  to this House.

One of the things that we have noted is that you have had an ability to build relationships because of your thoughtful and constructive manner.

I first came to know you, in fact, when I went with you on the Speaker’s tour to Europe with the Hon Doug Kidd.  As a new member of Parliament at the time, I certainly appreciated the wonderful support that you and your wife gave to me and my husband and I have never forgotten that.

Thank you for inviting me here today. This is my first official speaking engagement for 2013 and what better way to begin the working year than with a visit here today with Te Taitimu Trust – an iwi based organisation that is focusing on the future of their rangatahi.

To all the rangatahi who have come here to take part in this leadership wānanga – I congratulate you and acknowledge you for participating in what I am certain will be an inspiring and challenging five days.

I want to thank Community Research and in particular the tangata whenua committee, for inviting me to this special event today, to launch the Whanau Ora Research Website.

This is the third of three fabulous days that I have had, in which we have been immersed in the spirit of transformation we know to be Whanau Ora.

Thank you, Dickie Farrar for your words of welcome. It is, indeed, a privilege to be invited to share in this milestone - the transformation of Te Ao Mārama Whānau Ora Collective.

I wish to acknowledge the tangata whenua located within this Whānau Ora region of Te Moana ā Toi: Ngai Tūhoe; Te Whakatōhea; Ngāitai; and Te Whānau-a-Apanui

I was fascinated at the decision to host this conference in the Faculty of Engineering. And I had to wonder if we have reached a point in our history when ‘social engineering’ has finally become acceptable.

You may recall at the end of last century the concept of social engineering was treated with disdain – a public contempt for the notion that society might place priority on planning one’s future.

Newspaper editorials declared war on those activists who supposedly were part of a greater plot to concoct a New Order.

I was both intrigued and excited when I read the name of this conference - “What matters?” It is indeed a question that I have asked myself, and no doubt, you too have pondered over the years about what truly counts in this lifetime.

What are the lessons we have learned? What do we want to leave behind? What would we like to pass on to our children and grandchildren? How do we want to be remembered?
