I am here today, with each of you and all those who have supported you, to celebrate the liberation of your minds.

Children are the future of any community, and their wellness, their ability to achieve all of their huge potential, is a matter of the utmost importance.

You know, it is a special privilege to be here today, among a collective of like minds, because you are a group of women who have dedicated so much of your lives to eliminating violence among our whanau.

Our people are achieving great things in health, and in other fields. What is more, we are doing it against a background of enormous public ignorance and misunderstanding, that is starting to become actual hostility towards our people and our culture.

I understand that more than 400 people offer their time as Chairpersons, Directors, Trustee Supervisers, Internal Auditors and other office bearers to run Credit Unions. Credit Unions are one of the larger volunteer groups in Aotearoa.

Thank you for your long history of service to our young people, to scouting, and to the wider community. I understand the centenary of Scouting in the UK is not far off, and in New Zealand you have been established for over 80 years.

I am especially pleased that this event is hosted jointly by Te Runaka ki Otautahi o Kai Tahu and Volunteering Canterbury. Your working together in partnership demonstrates how diverse cultures can work together to achieve their respective desired goals, without one intruding on the other. It also signals the kind of relationship that I believe we should be striving for in this society of ours.

The work you do with prisoners and their whanau, while they are in prison and afterwards, has earned PARS enormous respect, so your invitation to me is a real honour. I fully support your approach, and I am sure these booklets will enable PARS to go on providing essential support to prisoners and their families.
