Social Development Minister Paula Bennett has announced $43.7 million for services for children in care as part of the Government’s focus on children.

“My heart sings when I think about the massive investment we are putting into some of our most vulnerable children,” says Ms Bennett.

“Our youth justice system and jails contain individuals who were abused and neglected as children, so putting resources into this vulnerable group is vital.”

Budget 2011 provides an extra $10 million to support Cantabrians rebuilding their lives and communities after the earthquake, Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says.

“This funding will go to local agencies to support Canterbury families as they deal with the impact of the earthquake and move forward.”

The cash injection will support counselling services, assist non-government organisations’ case management, co-ordinate services for families and support additional community-based services for those affected by the earthquakes.

A $15 million boost for employment assistance programmes in Budget 2011 will help more people into work, Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says.

“As we emerge from the recession, it is imperative people are work-ready as jobs become available,” Ms Bennett says. “So we’re continuing to put more funding into employment and training programmes to get Kiwis working.”

The $15 million of extra funding for 2011/12 follows a $12.6 million investment in Budget 2010.
