Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson has turned down a recommendation to assign the name Te Kōhua Peak to an unnamed peak located between The Remarkables and Hector Mountains in Central Otago.

The recommendation was made by the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa following a proposal by a member of the public and after an extended public consultation process.

Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson today announced the appointment of Matanuku Mahuika to the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa – New Zealand’s place naming authority.

Mr Mahuika was nominated for appointment to the Board by the Minister of Māori Affairs. His professional background, skills and experience will strongly support the roles and responsibilities of the Board, Mr Williamson said.

The South Ridge of Aoraki / Mount Cook will soon be named Hillary Ridge, Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson said today.

The Minister’s decision confirms a recommendation by the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa to alter the name South Ridge to Hillary Ridge.

“Sir Edmund made an enormous contribution to our country and abroad and it is befitting and appropriate that his contribution is acknowledged in this way,” Mr Williamson said.

The rating valuation systems for two Canterbury councils have been changed from 30 June 2011 following the devastating earthquakes that have struck the region, Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson said today.

The next general revaluation for Christchurch City Council has been extended to 1 December 2013 and 1 December 2012 for Waimakariri District Council. The July 2012 date for Selwyn District Council remains unchanged.

Government legislation also amends the circumstances for altering rating values between general revaluations.

Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson today announced the reappointment of Ken Taylor and Phillip Curnow to the Valuers Registration Board (VRB).

The Valuers Registration Board (VRB) is an independent statutory body administered by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ). The VRB oversees the registration of valuers and investigates complaints.

Mr Curnow is a highly experienced valuer who provides considerable urban commercial and industrial property expertise to the VRB, and was nominated by the New Zealand Institute of Valuers.

A Bill to enable the assignment of alternate place names was introduced to Parliament today.

Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson, today introduced legislation to amend the New Zealand Geographic Board (Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008.

The Bill makes minor changes to two aspects of the Act. First, the Bill clarifies that when the Board or the Minister for Land Information assign alternative place names, both names may be used either separately or together in official documents.

Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson has delivered the first reading of the Crown Pastoral Land (Rent for Pastoral Leases) Amendment Bill today, which will ensure that leases on crown pastoral land are fairer.

The Bill has already received wide-spread support from South Island high country farmers.

“The present rent system, which is based on land value, is both unworkable and has often created unnecessary conflict between Crown and lessees, Mr Williamson says.
