This is indeed an auspicious occasion. Ten years ago today the Resource Management Act became law.

The Resource Management Act is proving effective in a situation where tension and disagreement will always exist, regardless of the shape of legislation, Environment Minister, Marian Hobbs, said today.

When I think of New Zealand, the image is of a green land of forests and fields, lakes and rivers, with snow capped mountains and a coastline of wild rocky shores, sheltered bays and harbours and sandy beaches. This has been a commonly held view of our land for a long time. It has been reflected to us by visitors from abroad and used in the promotion of our tourism industry and our products.

The Minister for the Environment, Marian Hobbs, has welcomed the release of the report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry on Genetic Modification.

The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held at Rio de Janiero in 1992 changed the way we think about our place in the world. It anticipated, and addressed, potential major catastrophes in this 21st century that would have far reaching social, economic and environmental consequences.
