Over the past month we have been asking people around the country some very important questions:

· New Zealanders are passionate about their environment and the role nature can play in our lives - we see this in gardening and recreation, and we see it in wider support and appreciation of our native bush.

I would like to start by congratulating those who have got this model up and running. It is a great tool to help structure local decision-making on waste systems.

· Thank you for inviting me to help launch your new grants programme and thanks to the previous speakers for setting the scene and providing some wonderful examples of community-lead environmental initiatives.

Two things are really important to me as Minister for the Environment - getting some practical action to improve our environment, and involving a wide range of people in the community in decision making about our environment.
