An extra $20 million will be invested over four years to maintain momentum in high performance sport and boost Drug Free Sport NZ, Sport and Recreation Minister Jonathan Coleman says.

“We have a world class high performance sport system, and Rio 2016 is shaping up to be our most successful Olympic Games,” Dr Coleman says.

“A $16 million investment in Budget 2016 over four years will enable High Performance Sport NZ to leverage all the work and preparation for Rio as we look ahead to the next Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.

Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce and Sport and Recreation Minister Jonathan Coleman say the Government is investing up to $500,000 from the Major Events Development Fund into the 2016 Youth Sailing World Championship.

“This is a world-class sailing event which New Zealand has a proud heritage in. It’s great that we have been able to secure this opportunity to continue our fine record of hosting international sailing regattas,” Mr Joyce says.

Sport and Recreation Minister Jonathan Coleman has congratulated the recipients of this year’s Prime Minister’s Sport Scholarships.

“The Prime Minister’s Sport Scholarships provide financial assistance to high performance athletes, coaches, officials and support members as they juggle the demands of sport and study,” says Dr Coleman.

“Each year the Government invests around $4.25 million in the programme which is managed through High Performance Sport New Zealand.

Sport and Recreation Minister Jonathan Coleman has welcomed the launch of the New Zealand Water Safety Sector Strategy 2020.

“While the number of drownings has tracked downwards over recent years, we had a bad start to 2015. As at 30 June there have been 62 drownings, compared to 45 last year,” says Dr Coleman.

“Sadly drownings are largely preventable. Although the rates have declined, this summer was a strong reminder that there is still plenty of work to do educating Kiwis about water safety.

New Zealand GDP was boosted by $110 million, over 2,000 new jobs were created and more than 78,000 tickets were sold to overseas visitors.

Regionally GDP increased by $40 million in Wellington, $35 million in Auckland and $15 million in Christchurch. A further $25 million was delivered to the host regions – Hamilton, Napier, Nelson and Dunedin.
