In the invitation to come today, Barbara Phair asked me to speak on Labour’s philosophy, hopes, desires and ambitions in this year of the General Election.

Good afternoon and thank you to your President Geoff Piercy for the invitation to come to Invercargill today. I bring warm greetings from the Prime Minister, Helen Clark. I told her I was coming here today, and she specifically asked that I pass on her regards. I also thank my colleague, Mark Peck, for accompanying me here today.

The Retirement Villages Bill was introduced to Parliament just before Christmas. It underwent its first reading and is now being considered by the Justice and Electoral Select Committee. Although my role has to be somewhat removed from the process at this stage, I have made it clear to the Select Committee Chair Tim Barnett, that the government is interested in a comprehensive report-back, which identifies all the key concerns raised by submitters, so that we can consider whether changes are necessary.

If we are truly to ‘harness’ the contribution of our increasingly active retired population, then we owe it to them, to put in place the strategies that will support their continued participation in all aspects of society.

This strategy stands witness to that commitment.
