Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson today announced that owners of retirement village units are now entitled to a better minimum payout following situations such as an earthquake.

Previously, a retirement village operator could deduct maintenance charges for future work on uninhabitable or destroyed homes from the owner’s original capital payment on the property. Under changes to the Retirement Villages Code of Practice 2008, which take effect today, this is no longer possible.

Customs Minister Maurice Williamson says on average 60,000 people a week are now using Customs’ automated passenger processing system.

SmartGate was introduced in 2009 and since its roll out in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch has been used by 6.7 million arriving and departing passengers.

“The original targets had SmartGate use reaching more than 60,000 users a week in 2015, so I’m delighted it has shattered all expectations. As more New Zealanders and Australians shift to ePassports we will see a further increase in usage.

The Government has approved changes to the way the Rating Valuations Act 1998 applies to Christchurch City Council, enabling it to start a long awaited general revaluation later this year.

Customs Minister Maurice Williamson says an operation targeting express delivery low value imports has found more than a quarter are undervalued and evading duty.

Operation Hilton II examined 2562 express consignments and found 733 consignments were above the low-value threshold.

“High value goods are being mis-described and undervalued to speed up border clearance and evade duty. A total of $158,000 in lost revenue has been collected as a result of this operation.

Statistics Minister Maurice Williamson says good progress has been made in the first year of a new commitment to producing the country’s most important statistics, called Tier 1 statistics.

In August 2012, the Cabinet agreed there should be 162 Tier 1 statistics, with the full list to be in place by 2016.

Statistics New Zealand now administers 101 Tier 1 statistics, 17 of which have been upgraded to the list in the past 12 months.

The Government has sounded a clear warning to distributors and retailers who deliberately, or otherwise, contravene recently enacted psychoactive substance laws.

The 28 day period for submitting licence applications under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2013 ended this week, with no products or retailers permitted in the market unless they have been granted an interim licence by the Psychoactive Substances Regulatory Authority.

The Government has released an initial action plan from Doug Martin, the Crown Manager for Christchurch City Council’s building consenting functions.

“The Crown Manager’s terms of reference tasked him with providing an action plan within one month. The plan we have now received provides a comprehensive set of actions which will address issues ranging from systems and processes, to staff culture,” says Local Government Minister Chris Tremain.
