The Government has announced a comprehensive strategy to reduce the number of at-risk young people not in employment or training in regional New Zealand. 

Economic Development Minister Simon Bridges, Social Development Minister Anne Tolley and Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Paul Goldsmith joined Prime Minister Bill English who made the announcement at Mr Apple in Hawke’s Bay today.

Budget 2017 will invest $372.8 million of new operating funding in the second round of the Government’s Innovative New Zealand programme, Economic Development Minister Simon Bridges and Science and Innovation Minister Paul Goldsmith say.

“Every initiative in the Budget flows from having a strong economic plan that delivers sustainable growth and jobs,” Mr Bridges says. “The Government’s Innovative New Zealand programme invests in the skills and innovation that will keep our economy growing in the years ahead.”

The funding includes:

Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce and Transport Minister Simon Bridges have today congratulated students from Rutherford College and Green Bay High School for winning the Waterview Connection Schools Challenge.

Over the past three months 2,592 Year 10 students from across Auckland have been learning about engineering careers by taking part in the challenge about the Waterview Connection, one of New Zealand’s most complex roading projects and one of the most important infrastructure developments ever to take place in New Zealand.
