Acting Youth Minister Anne Tolley today announced the successful applicants for Youth Fund 2017.

“I’m pleased to announce that 36 projects will share $150,000 of funding available under Youth Fund 2017,” says Mrs Tolley.

Youth Fund is about supporting community initiatives designed and led by young people, either working alone or in partnership with youth organisations.

“Young people made up the panel which assessed applications, making this a completely youth-led initiative,” says Mrs Tolley.

Sixteen councils up and down New Zealand will share $231,400 of funding under the Local Government Youth Project Fund 2017, Acting Youth Minister Anne Tolley announced today.

“This fund supports city, district and regional councils to deliver projects that provide young people with leadership, mentoring and volunteering skills, and help them make a difference in their communities,” says Mrs Tolley.

Nine communities around New Zealand will receive funding of $10,000 each to deliver the Youth in Emergency Services (YES) programme in 2017, Acting Youth Minister Anne Tolley announced today.

“This programme aims to foster an ongoing, sustainable relationship between young people and the volunteer emergency services,” says Mrs Tolley.

“Young people involved get to build their knowledge and skills, and it’s also a boost for communities which can sometimes find it difficult to attract emergency services volunteers.

Around 40 South Island young people and people working in the youth sector are being supported to attend the SingularityU New Zealand Summit, which kicked off in Christchurch yesterday, says Acting Youth Minister Anne Tolley.

Organised by Singularity University, a Silicon Valley based think tank, the three day summit aims to inspire and educate participants in how technology can be harnessed to create change and build a positive future.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman and Acting Youth Minister Anne Tolley say young people will be recruited to help raise awareness of rheumatic fever amongst their peers.

“Rheumatic fever is a serious but preventable disease. Children and young people from Maori and Pacific communities are the most vulnerable,” Dr Coleman says.

“To further help raise awareness about the disease we’re going to recruit and train around 100 young people, mainly Maori and Pacific aged between 11 and 19 years, to talk about how to prevent rheumatic fever.

The $350,000 Local Government Youth Project Fund is open for applications, Acting Youth Minister Anne Tolley announced today.

“This fund is about supporting local councils to deliver projects that encourage young people to make a difference in their communities,” says Mrs Tolley.

“We want to help councils reach out to young people aged 12 to 24, and offer them more volunteering, mentoring and leadership opportunities.”

The fund can provide one-off amounts to individual councils of between $10,000 and $30,000.

A Christchurch based youth development provider, 24-7 Youthwork Trust (24-7YW) will receive around $108,000 under a new partnership aimed at providing more youth mentoring and leadership opportunities in South Island schools, Youth Minister Nikki Kaye announced today.

The programme will be available to schools choosing to participate from Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury and Otago.

“The Government will contribute $27,000 to this initiative, along with equal contributions from schools, churches and community groups,” says Ms Kaye.

A creative sector programme that helps young people from disadvantaged backgrounds make positive life changes will receive $90,000 under a new partnership between the Government and Te Aratika Trust, Youth Minister Nikki Kaye announced today.

“The Government will contribute $30,000 and Te Aratika Trust will contribute $60,000 to support at least 770 young people to participate in the programme, which will be delivered by AdairBeatz,” says Ms Kaye.

“Youth Parliament is about ensuring young New Zealanders understand politics and the democratic process, and about inspiring our next generation of politicians and political journalists,” says Ms Kaye.

Youth Minister Nikki Kaye today announced $20,000 of funding to help develop resources to support LGBTI young people who are leaving school and entering employment, education or training.

“This is a time of change and often uncertainty for all young people, but LGBTI young people can face additional challenges when making this transition,” says Ms Kaye.

“The funding will go towards tools that support LGBTI young people to develop the resilience needed to safely navigate the new and sometimes difficult circumstances they find themselves in.

The Government will invest around $430,000 over three years in a partnership that will support around 1500 mentoring opportunities for young people in Auckland and Waikato, Youth Minister Nikki Kaye announced today.

Lead partner The Vodafone Foundation will contribute $520,000 over three years, along with $354,000 in-kind funding from the University of Auckland, $230,000 from Charitable Trusts and $35,000 from secondary school partners.

The Wakatipu Youth Trust (WYT) will receive funding of $10,000 to develop mentoring opportunities for young people in 2016/2017, Youth Minister Nikki Kaye announced today.

“This funding will support around 20 young people to access mentoring opportunities,” says Ms Kaye.

WYT was established in April 2011 following the merger of Queenstown Life Trust and Wakatipu District Youth Trust. Throughout the year, WYT access young people via a youth centre, mentoring, events, work in schools and one-on-one interactions.

The Buller Rural Education Activities Programme (REAP) will receive funding of $110,000 in 2016/17 to support local young people to achieve the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award, Youth Minister Nikki Kaye announced today.

“This funding will support a minimum of 100 local young people in the Buller region, from Karamea to Westport, Reefton and Punakaiki, to achieve their award,” says Ms Kaye.

“The Hillary Award is about young people setting personally challenging targets and then striving to reach those targets.

Youth Minister Nikki Kaye today announced funding totalling $150,000 to support increased involvement of up to 350 young people in civil defence and emergency services in New Zealand.

Minister Kaye made the announcement at the two-day National Emergency Management Conference being held at Te Papa, Wellington.

“I am allocating $50,000 to establish the Youth in Civil Defence Fund. I expect this to fund a diverse range of youth-led initiatives, from volunteering opportunities to public education and public preparedness campaigns,” says Ms Kaye.

“The Youth Awards recognise young people who’ve made outstanding contributions to their communities, as well as people who’ve supported or championed young people,” says Ms Kaye.

Funding of $60,000 over three years to support a youth volunteering programme with Fashion Week New Zealand Limited was announced today by Youth Minister Nikki Kaye.

“This funding will help up to 600 young people aged 16 to 24 get hands-on, behind the scenes experience, mentoring and instruction from industry experts and leaders during NZ Fashion Week,” says Ms Kaye.
