“On average 103 people die in New Zealand waters each year. Water Safety New Zealand’s campaign reminds people to reflect on whether it really is safe to enter the water,” says Dr Coleman.

Sport and Recreation Minister Jonathan Coleman says Cambridge is all set for today’s start of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup at the Avantidrome.

“Around 300 top track cyclists from around the world including 20 New Zealand cyclists will be taking part in this weekend’s event,” says Dr Coleman.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for New Zealanders to head along and support our cycling team as they compete in the team pursuit, team sprint, individual sprint, keirin and omnium.

“Being overweight or obese is expected to overtake tobacco as the leading preventable risk to health in New Zealand within the next 12 months,” says Dr Coleman.

“There is no single solution that will fix obesity. That’s why we have developed a range of interventions across Government, the private sector, communities, schools and families.

Sport and Recreation Minister Jonathan Coleman has welcomed the launch of the New Zealand Water Safety Sector Strategy 2020.

“While the number of drownings has tracked downwards over recent years, we had a bad start to 2015. As at 30 June there have been 62 drownings, compared to 45 last year,” says Dr Coleman.

“Sadly drownings are largely preventable. Although the rates have declined, this summer was a strong reminder that there is still plenty of work to do educating Kiwis about water safety.

“I would like to congratulate Durban on becoming the first African city to host a Commonwealth Games,” says Dr Coleman.

Durban was named as host of the 2022 Commonwealth Games during the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly being held in Auckland from 30 August - 3 September.

Sport and Recreation Minister Jonathan Coleman says a year out from the Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games it looks like New Zealanders will have plenty to celebrate at both events.

“High Performance Sport NZ tell me we are on track to achieve our medal targets of 14 or more Olympic medals and 12 Paralympic gold medals,” says Dr Coleman.

Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce and Sport and Recreation Minister Jonathan Coleman welcome a PwC report which confirms the positive economic impact of co-hosting the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

New Zealand GDP was boosted by $110 million, over 2,000 new jobs were created and more than 78,000 tickets were sold to overseas visitors.

Regionally GDP increased by $40 million in Wellington, $35 million in Auckland and $15 million in Christchurch. A further $25 million was delivered to the host regions – Hamilton, Napier, Nelson and Dunedin.

Sport and Recreation Minister Jonathan Coleman says this weekend’s final of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup marks the end of a great three weeks of football.

“The FIFA U-20 World Cup draws to a close this weekend with Brazil taking on Serbia at Auckland’s North Harbour Stadium,” says Dr Coleman.

“New Zealanders have really got behind the tournament. Around 300,000 people have attended matches and a further 30,000 people visited fever pitch fan zones.

Sport and Recreation Minister Jonathan Coleman has today announced two new appointments to the Drug Free Sport New Zealand Board.

Tim Castle and Dr John Mayhew have been appointed to the Board. Justice Warwick Gendall has been reappointed Board Chair, and Board members Stephen Cottrell and Sarah Ulmer have been reappointed.
