Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye has today opened Youth Fund 2015 with $200,000 available for community projects.

“The Ministry of Youth Development’s Youth Fund is unique in that it supports projects designed and led by young people aged 12 to 24, or projects by youth organisations in partnership with young people that develop community participation,” Ms Kaye says.

“Panels of young people will assess applications to determine successful projects and where the funding will go, resulting in a completely youth-led initiative.

Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye today welcomed the opening of nominations for Her Majesty The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme, which aims to discover, celebrate and support young people from Commonwealth countries.

The Ministry of Youth Development funding will support a diverse range of organisations and projects. A Youth Trust set up in honour of Sir Peter Blake will receive $50,000 in funding to support its 2015 and 2016 Expedition Programme, Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye has announced.

The Young Blake Expedition Programme aims to follow in the footsteps of Sir Peter and motivate the next generation of environmental leaders in the conservation of the Southern Ocean and its islands.

Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Chris Finlayson and Minister of Youth Affairs Nikki Kaye today announced $50,000 from the Ministry of Youth Development to support youth participation in the performing arts.

Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye has today announced an additional $200,000 in funding to expand the Youth in Emergency Services (YES) programme. 

“Following the Rotorua pilot at the start of 2013 I announced the YES programme would be extended to six locations, in areas such as Alexandra and Kaikoura. I understand that these programmes have received positive feedback from the coordinators, service volunteers, and young participants,” Ms Kaye says.

The Government has confirmed $2.5 million of new operating spending over the next three years for youth enterprise initiatives, Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye says. 

“This funding supports a number of initiatives for young people to learn financial literacy and business enterprise skills, as well as get opportunities to develop social-enterprise projects,” she says.

Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye today announced the recipients of the Youth Week 2014 Awards.

“It is truly impressive to see the difference and change that these award recipients have brought about in their communities,” Ms Kaye says.

Youth Week runs from 17 May – 25 May. Community organisations across the country have been planning their own Youth Week events. Many of these are facilitated by funding grants through Ara Taiohi, who are also administering Youth Week.

Budget 2014 provides $8.6 million of new operating spending over the next four years for social support needs at Youth One-Stop Shops, Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye says.

“Currently Youth One-Stop Shops are funded to provide health care to young people, but the money hasn’t been there to provide social support,” she says. “I understand that social support work can take up about 30 per cent of the time of Youth One-Stop Shops.

Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye is today asking New Zealanders to recognise outstanding young community members and nominate them for a Youth Week 2014 Award.

Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye has today announced one-off funding of $20,000 for 30 Flaxmere College students to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award programme.

“There have been difficulties for young people in Flaxmere and I want to ensure that more young people have opportunities to develop their leadership abilities and contribute to their community,” Ms Kaye says.

Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye has announced that from today, the Ministry of Youth Development will be accepting applications from city and district councils to the Youth Development Partnership Fund.

There is a total of $889,000 for allocation with between $10,000 and $70,000 available per project.

“The point of this fund is get young people involved in and leading projects that are meaningful to them and their communities,” Ms Kaye says.

Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye today announced $55,000 in funding through the Ministry of Youth Development to help strengthen services available to LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender or intersex) youth.

“There are a number of organisations around New Zealand that have been delivering health and services to LGBTI youth but they need to be able to better co-ordinate a plan to address issues like bullying and suicide,” Ms Kaye says.

Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye joined Prime Minister John Key at a dinner last night to celebrate young participants of the 2014 Prime Minister’s Youth Programme.

The annual programme, which is now in its fifth year, involves up to 100 young people aged 14 - 17 years in Auckland. They have been recognised for facing and managing challenges and taking positive steps in their lives, such as improving their academic performance, or moving away from behaviour like truancy and low-level offending.
