Auckland businessman Evan Williams has been appointed as a member of the board of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa, the Minister for Arts Culture and Heritage Christopher Finlayson announced today.

“Mr Williams’ international experience at the highest level in commercial law, communication, negotiation, financing and corporate governance will be an asset to the Board in its future development” Mr Finlayson said.

Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Chris Finlayson today announced the establishment of a 76 hectare reserve for the people of Wellington and New Zealand on the iconic Miramar Peninsula.

The new reserve area, known as Watts Peninsula, is a prominent Wellington landmark at the northern tip of the Miramar Peninsula and a historically significant part of New Zealand.

Changes to a production funding scheme will enable more New Zealand feature films to be brought to production over the next two years and will support the sustainability of the local screen industry, says Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Chris Finlayson.

Mr Finlayson announced today that the Qualifying New Zealand Production Expenditure (QNZPE) threshold for feature films to qualify for the Screen Production Incentive Fund (SPIF) has been lowered from $4 million per production to $2.5 million.

A bill that improves the governance and operation of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust was introduced to Parliament has been introduced to Parliament by Arts Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson.

The bill replaces, and modernises the intent of, the Historic Places Act to improve the regulatory framework for archaeological heritage, and improve the balance between heritage interests, private ownership interests and economic development objectives.

A film co-production agreement between New Zealand and South Africa will benefit the creative industries in both countries, Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Christopher Finlayson said today.

Government will mark the centenary of the First World War beginning in 2014 with significant international and domestic projects and ceremonies, Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Christopher Finlayson announced today.

“The First World War was one of the most significant events of the 20th Century and had a deep impact on New Zealand society,” Mr Finlayson said. “Ten per cent of our population of one million at that time served overseas, of which 18,000 died and 40,000 were wounded. “Quake Stories is a living memorial,” Mr Finlayson said. “The website offers a place for all those affected by the earthquakes to tell their stories, and ensures those stories will be available to the historians of the future.”

Arts Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson has welcomed the New Zealand Film Archive’s discovery of lost reels of what is believed to be the earliest surviving Alfred Hitchcock film, 1923’s The White Shadow.

“This discovery shows the value of the Film Archive not only to New Zealand's film heritage, but internationally,” Mr Finlayson said. “It shows what a cultural asset the Film Archive is.”

The Government will provide a $4 million grant for the Len Lye Centre project which is to be built immediately adjacent to New Plymouth’s Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Christopher Finlayson announced.

A new Government initiative will give young people the chance to participate in orchestral music, Arts Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson said today.

Mr Finlayson today launched Sistema Aotearoa, a New Zealand version of the successful El Sistema programme which has helped young people around the world to participate in orchestral music and develop important skills.

The pilot programme, based in Otara, will be managed by Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. The APO has developed a programme of instruction and teaching after school and during the holidays.

Arts Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson today paid tribute to the life and career of Dame Judith Binney, who passed away last night.

“Dame Judith was a leader in a number of fields,” Mr Finlayson said. “She had been a valued member of the Arts Council and the Historic Places Trust, a pioneer in New Zealand history, and a widely respected teacher and scholar. The governance structure of the Waitangi National Trust Board will be modernised to reflect the cultural and historical importance of the Treaty grounds at Waitangi, Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson and Waitangi National Trust Board Chair Pita Paraone announced today.

The Board was set up in 1932 by Lord and Lady Bledisloe, when they gifted to the people of New Zealand the 506 hectare Waitangi estate which includes the Treaty grounds. Lord Bledisloe was Governor-General at the time.
