Surveillance Flights For Toothfish "Pirates" Under Way.

New Zealand's Defence Forces began their aerial surveillance activities in the Ross Sea region yesterday, Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Hon Simon Upton said this evening.

As announced on 29 December 1998, the planes will be looking for 'pirate' vessels fishing for toothfish in the Ross Sea.

The results of the aerial surveillance programme will be announced in due course.

The Minister of Defence, Hon Max Bradford, will accompany one of the surveillance flights next week.
