Reappointments of Visiting Justices

Associate Minister of Justice, Rick Barker today announced reappointments of 21 Visiting Justices.
Barristers and solicitors as well as Justices of the Peace can be appointed by the Governor-General to be Visiting Justices.
"Visiting Justices play an important role in New Zealand’s justice system. Their role is to examine the treatment and conduct of prison inmates and they have the authority to inquire into abuses or alleged abuses in prisons by way of a hearing," Rick Barker said.
All reappointments are for a term of three years and are in addition to District Court Judges who remain automatically as Visiting Justices.
The appointments have been made in accordance with Cabinet Office advice on Government decisions and actions in the pre-election period.
