Principal Disputes Tribunal Referee Appointed

Justice Minister, Tony Ryall, today announced the appointment of Mr Grant Aislabie, of Tauranga, to the newly formed
position of Principal Disputes Tribunal Referee.

"The recommendation to appoint Mr Aislabie came from an independent panel headed by the Chief District Court Judge",
said Mr Ryall.

"Mr Aislabie's new role will be to ensure that the integrity of the Disputes Tribunal is maintained and that Referees operate
effectively and efficiently.

"His functions will include overseeing the selection process for Referees, giving legal advice to Referees and advising the
Chief District Court Judge on matters such as the rostering and performance of Referees.

"The position was established by the Disputes Tribunals Amendment Act 1998, and the appointment is for a term of five
years.

"Mr Aislabie is a barrister and solicitor from Papamoa, and has over 27 years practising experience.

"He is a council member of the Waikato Bay of Plenty District Law Society.

"Since 1990, Mr Aislabie has been a Tenancy Adjudicator and he is an Associate of the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute
of New Zealand.

"He has wide experience in resource management, both in the context of his legal career and in outside business interests",
said Mr Ryall.
