The Minister of Justice, Hon D.A.M. Graham, today announced the appointment of Wellington Barrister and Solicitor Garry Leslie Evans as a Coroner.
Mr Evans will be sworn in at the Wellington District Court tomorrow and will sit in Wellington.
Mr Evans is a partner in a Wellington law firm and he will remain in practice while serving as Coroner.
He graduated LLB from Victoria University in 1965 and was admitted to the Bar in the same year.
He has been a staff solicitor and then partner with the same law firm for 30 years, specialising in trades union and employment law, accident compensation, compensation for industrial disease and medical law.
He has extensive experience as Counsel appearing before Compensation, Industrial, Arbitration, Labour, Employment, District and Coroners Courts and before the Accident Compensation Appeal Authority and the Medical Practitioners' Disciplinary Committee.
Mr Evans has extensive medico-legal knowledge and experience through professional practice and sitting as Reserve Member of the Medical Misadventure Advisory Committees in Auckland and Wellington.
He is a member of the NZ Law Society sub-committee on accident compensation. He was the NZLS's nominee on the working party constituted to advise on use of advisory panels for medical misadventure claims.
He is a member of the Wellington Medico-Legal Society. Since 1985 he has held appointment as the Maritime Appeal Authority.
