New President of the Electoral Commission

The Minister of Justice, Hon D.A.M. Graham, today announced the appointment of The Rt Hon Ian McKay as President of the Electoral Commission.

Mr McKay succeeds Hon Justice John Wallace who retired late last year.

Mr Graham says Mr McKay has had a distinguished career in private practice and as a Judge of the Court of Appeal.

Prior to his appointment to the Bench in 1991, Mr McKay was a director of a number of private and public companies.

He is a former President of the Wellington District Law Society and a former Vice President of the NZ Law Society.

He chaired the NZ Torts and General Law Reform Committee, the Committee on the Law of Defamation and the Evidence and Law Reform Committee.

His appointment as President of the Electoral Commission is for three years.
