New Health Research Council chair appointed

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says Dr Lester Levy has been appointed chair of the Health Research Council (HRC), replacing outgoing chair Sir Robert Stewart. 

“Congratulations to Dr Lester Levy on his appointment to the HRC board and also as HRC chair,” says Dr Coleman.

“Dr Levy has an extensive health management background and strong health sector governance experience. He is currently the Chair of Waitemata DHB and Auckland DHB, as well as Auckland Transport.

“I would also like to thank outgoing chair Sir Robert Stewart for his commitment as HRC chair since 2009. His able leadership and passion for health research have been greatly appreciated.”

Dr Levy’s three year team as chair and member of the HRC board commences 1 January 2016.

Biography Dr Lester Levy

Dr Levy is a medical doctor with an extensive health management background, including time as Chief Executive of the MercyAscot Hospital Group, the South Auckland Crown Health Enterprise and the NZ Blood Service.

Dr Levy has strong health sector governance experience. He is the current chair of Waitemata and Auckland DHBs, and Auckland Transport.

He was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2013 for services to health and education.
