New chair for New Zealand Symphony Orchestra board

Musician and internationally experienced board director Laurence Kubiak has been appointed as the new chair of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Board, Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Carmel Sepuloni announced today.

A board member since 2017, Laurence Kubiak is currently the Chief Executive of the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research. He is a regular commentator on economics, technology, innovation and market development and has been a professional musician. Mr Kubiak begins his three-year appointment as chair on 1 June.

“Laurence Kubiak brings an excellent business and financial skill set to this new role in addition to his considerable classical music sector knowledge and experience,” Carmel Sepuloni said. 

“My thanks go to Donald Best who is stepping down as chair, after serving almost 10 years on the board. Donald Best has led the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra through a time of change and refocus for the orchestra to explore new business opportunities. 

“Current board members Peter Biggs and Clare Murray, have been reappointed until 31 May 2021 and 31 May 2022, respectively.

“Peter Biggs is Chief Executive of the Assignment Group New Zealand and formerly the CE Clemenger BBDO in Melbourne and Chair of the Arts Council of New Zealand (Creative New Zealand).

“Clare Murray has governance expertise in both the arts sector and the financial services industry.  A former chair of the Christchurch Arts Festival, with her husband she established the investment banking firm Murray & Co.

“These appointments ensure continuity for the board and help safeguard the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s position as one of international standing,” Carmel Sepuloni said.
