Minister of Local Government Tony Ryall announced today the appointment of Sir Ross Jansen as Chairman of the Local Government Commission.
The Local Government Commission has a range of responsibilities including reporting to the Minister on matters relating to local government and reviewing and determining local authority boundaries and structures.
Sir Ross served as Mayor of Hamilton City from 1977-89 and Chairman of the Waikato Regional Council from 1989-91. He was inaugural President of the New Zealand Local Government Association from 1988-90, and became the association's first life member in 1990.
Sir Ross was Chairman of the Prime Ministerial Task Force on Positive Ageing from 1996-97, and has served as Commissioner of the Waikato Area Health Board, Chairman of the Midland Regional Health Authority, and Chairman of Midland Health.
He trained as a lawyer and practiced in a leading Hamilton law office for 21 years until 1978.
As Chairman of the Local Government Commission, Sir Ross will be ex-officio a member of the Representation Commission.
